Audience Research: BBFC

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has specific guidelines within which a film must fit, in order to gain a certain certificate. As the target audience for our film is teenagers age 12+ I think the most suitable certificate would be 12. I think that there are no real issues with our film, as the theme is mainly love and jealousy. It poses less threat of discrimination than an action or horror film would. The guidelines go into detail about the showing of the use of drugs, sex, nudity and sadism but our film doesn’t address any of these themes so it is not an issue. The guidelines for the use of bad language say "Moderate language is allowed. The use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’) must be infrequent." I think that our film fits in the guidelines, as we only strong language on one or two occassions and each if fully justified by context. I think that this doesnt limit us at all and has the advantage of giving us a broad audience age range so we were willing to comprimise a more frequent use of bad language, which would probably have been inappropriate anyway. The plot of our film is quite complex, and requires a decent level of maturity and understanding to be fully appreciated, however I don't think it is too complex for 12 year olds.

The following link shows the requirement of the BBFC for a 12 certificate in more detail:
